Minor Project - Additional Room Concepts

(Upstairs) Bathroom Concept

(Upstairs) Baby's Room

(Downstairs) Hallway

As I am now moving onto modelling the environments, I needed to create a few more concept pieces to work out the smaller details of the main rooms.

Minor Project - Living Room Environment Concept

In preparation for modelling the living room and kitchen set, I have completed the concept piece for the living room.

Minor Project - First Texture Testing

This is quite a rough test and there are some glaring issues to work on, but overall this is starting look like a pencil drawn sketch. I intend to test real pencil cross hatching that is then scanned in next. Creating a fully modeled asset and testing the textures on that will likely give a better impression of the final look too.

Minor Project - Kitchen Environment Concept and Improved Character Concept

This concept took longer than expected to get to a good enough standard, but overall I am very happy with the result. This concept has been designed to look like a 1970's British kitchen.

After Alan's suggestions I have tried to add a little more depth to the skin of the character, in order to accentuate the important details of the face that weren't as clear before.

Minor Project - Sound Collector Style Development

After looking at the artist Phil showed to me, I worked on my previous design, making his skin pastier and sketching in much finer detail. I've also looked at some small possible changes to the character which may aid in accentuating his dullness. I am overall very happy with this version of the character. I am mostly drawn to version 1 and 3, they both look much better than the previous versions of this character whereas the added details in versions 2 and 4 seem quite obstructive.

Adaptation B - 'Sound Collection' Concepts

I've made these concepts to show how I want the sound collection to work. While he is collecting sounds from a house and leaving it silent, I wanted to back that up visually using a transition from colour to grey scale. As the sound dies away when it is collected, as will the colour surrounding the sound. I've used one of the lines from the poem in this concept.

Adaptation B - Sound Collector Skin Tweaking

After the latest tutorial with Alan, it was clear that I needed to change the skin of the character slightly. It probably shouldn't be grey but just pale instead. After making this set of tests I am fairly certain that I want something very close to thumbnail 4.

YPGTTO Speed Paint Challenge 5 : The Bassoon District

Finally found some time to take part in the speed painting. Here's my vision of the bassoon district.

Adaptation B - SC Concept Progress

After the tutorial with Alan I worked on multiple versions of larger ears as he suggested I exaggerate the sound aspect of the character more. I may add a specialist briefcase and make other smaller tweaks to the character so that his job/role will be greater emphasized.

Further progress on the colour concept of the contraption. I will likely make more changes to both of these before I finalize the designs and make final concepts.

Adaptation B - Rough Colour Concepts

Currently these are my designs for the sound collector and his sound contraption. They are still quite rough designs but overall they show how I see this character currently. I feel that I am getting very close to the final concepts for these as they are beginning to feel like a uniform set.

Possible Voice Over Artists

I have narrowed down my search for the voice over artist to these two I found on the voiceover.com website. I'm quite confident one of these is the voice that best fits the tone of the poem.

-Johnny - North American (featured at top of page)
-Chris - British (further down the page)

Adaptation B - Uniform Thumbnails

From the uniforms I have looked at for reference, I found an old postman uniform to be the most fitting as a starting point for my design. I have made four versions of the same uniform exploring some of the key details I may use in the final concept. Some of the smaller details here may change but I feel that these are quite close to how I want the 'Sound Collector' to look.

Adaptation B - Hair and Ear Design Thumbnails

After settling on the basic face design, I have narrowed down my ideas of the hair and ears to 4 designs each. I'm starting to like how this character is looking and of the 4 hair designs I personally prefer B as I think a cheap toupee would work well for this character. Let me know if you have a favorite.

Adaptation B - Further Face Thumbnails

I've created some more thumbnails for the face shape and details as I may have narrowed in too fast on my idea. I am particularly pleased with the face details shown on 4, 5 and 6 and I feel that it is very close to how I picture this character. Personally I am quite confident about taking number 5 forward with some more refined thumbnails to figure out the ears and hair. Let me know what you think.

Adaptation B - Sound Collector Face Thumbnails

I am fairly certain on the basic shape of his head so I have started to narrow down his hair. I feel that this character would have a thick moustache, but I have created alternatives without to see how much it changes his look. I am currently torn between 1 and 7 as my choice moving forward.

Character - Alien Character Colour Completed

The colour scheme for this character took much longer to get right than the plant characters. I am however very happy with the result.

Character - Plant Character 1 Colour completed

I have completed the colour and detail for my first plant character. All that is left to do to complete him now is to neaten up all of the details and perhaps tweak some of the colours. The face will need more work in order to make it a more emotive character.

Character - Approximate Size Chart

I made this size chart for my three characters mostly for my benefit as I work on the colour concepts of these characters. I will likely include this in my final 'character bible' however, as it provides a useful insight into the size differences and how they would interact with each other.
